Despite of the snow – Gold and Brass was still a great show!

The beginning of February greeted us with a blast of arctic weather and an appreciable fall of snow. Would the Dorchester Abbey Concert have to be cancelled? Not a bit. Both the Aldbourne Band and Reading Phoenix Choir turned up in a rather chilly Dorchester Abbey for the afternoon rehearsal as planned.

Singing with the Aldbourne brass band was a wonderful experience, with the rich sound matching the acoustic of the abbey. In the concert. the Band performed arrangements  including the The Incredibles, Chick Corea’s La Fiesta and Philip Harper’s ‘The Greatest Storyteller’ with a lovely version of ‘Pure Imagination’ from the band’s euphonium soloist.

Reading Phoenix Choir wowed the audience with their pieces which included John Scott’s ‘Behold O God’ and a lovely arrangement of the traditional American folk tune ‘Shenandoah’ to name but a few. The choir also performed some  joint items with the band, including Sandy Smith’s moving arrangement of John William’s Hymn to the Fallen, the Hallelujah Chorus, and Hubert Parry’s Coronation Anthem ‘I am Glad’.

We look forward to further opportunities to perform with the Aldbourne in the future.
